For god's sake, throw some mud on that R2, it's blinding me :)

Looking good, I miss my R2 buddy.
You no longer have yours??

Paul, pls, make some vids or complete worklog of checking your R2.
How complex to build droid? Any bom and manuals in public?
As Xeno can chime in, Astromech.net is where to go for all things R2-D2 building

I had the camera rolling as I dismantled R2, the timelapse should be interesting to watch

That upgrade project will appear on my Where Nerdy Is Cool YouTube channel once completed...then it's a couple hours of Adobe Premiere Pro CC time doing the post production fun

Sold the last one I made a few years ago, it was a R2 rebuild to R5X2, and was planning to make C3PO and R2 together, but my Mom needed a kidney, and I took longer too recover :-?

I sold the R5 to a German collector, here is what he looked like, I tried to make it as accurate as the original with all the blaster damage and panel lines.

That's a very sharp looking droid!

By the way, the picture in your signature is showing as a broken image

I haven't made much progress on the repair...I over did it at the gym (I go 5 days a week). I went a little crazy on chest day and upped the weights a bit more, since I was feeling good. Well a day later, I was having some pretty good back spasms (It's a really lousy way to learn how balanced and inter-connected your pectorals are to your rhomboids!). Ah, the joys of middle age!

I am also debating replacing the large, blue booster cover piece with a 3d printed one. The current one is a solid 6061 aluminum one that's quite heavy.

I wish! I wouldn't mind if they stayed!

They are going to be on display for a local Comic-Con next month, so they will be in my booth with R2-D2 :)

I packed up my Ultimaker Original last night...sold on eBay to someone that has a few UMO's but not one with the built in heat bed. It is definitely going to a good home.

Last night I also un-boxed one of the Ultimaker 2+ Extendeds to do some prints with. I kind of chuckled, whenever that thing homes, it seems like it is going on forever!

One thing this UM2+ Ext has that I have seen occasionally...is the extruder opening for the filament gets blocked / covered by the mesh material that contains the Bowden tube and wiring to the print head. I used some blue tape to move it out of the way.

I have been very busy lately, it felt like I was getting nowhere past month while things were just piling up on my desk.
Managed to get some things finished past week though, so the situation appears to be a bit more under control now.

We finally managed to publish the article where the development that led to the Olsson block and the Ruby nozzle is described by the way, after two years of submitting it to various journals and rewriting it! :-)
Article: http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.10 ... ld.iop.org
Direct link to supplementary data: http://iopscience.iop.org/1402-4896/92/ ... ppdata.pdf

It is funny how some things develop very quick in academia, while other things takes forever.
I did not expect that both the block and the ruby nozzle would be commercialized when we started with the article, and in particular I did not expect it to happen before the article was published
So you can see how some of the pictures are rather old and the design of the ruby holder for example is the very first one used for research, which looks quite different from the one later developed for the commercial nozzle.
